Four Ways to Wear Skinny Jeans

Skinny jeans were probably just starting to catch on when you left for your mission. No longer just for teenagers and the razor thin, skinny jeans have moved from the fringes of fashion to the mainstream.

To help you decipher this fashion trend, we’ve put together four outfits based on skinny jeans.

First, some clarification. Even though they’re called skinny, you don’t need the figure of a teenage track star to sport this look. With a little effort, returned missionaries with “real figures” can locate a stylish pair of skinny jeans that flatters. Besides, the jeans don’t (and shouldn’t) fit skin tight, it’s more the opening at the ankle that is skinny.

1. Here’s a classy everyday ensemble with a medium wash skinny jean. Worn with ballet flats, the look can be casual or dressy. Think Audrey Hepburn.

2. This outfit is an example of a slightly dressier look with dark wash denim and riding boots worn over the jeans. Wearing boots over jeans has the added advantage of being warm!

3. For a more casual look, pair your skinny jeans with some TOMS . We really like the cuff on these skinnies. It gives your ankles a little bit of company.

4. If you like a distressed wash for your jeans, skinny jeans are still an option for you. Throw on a classic pair of Chuck Taylor Converse.

As you can see, the skinny jeans trend works well with a number of styles. However, if you’re still not convinced skinny jeans are right for you, the good news is that you can still find boot cut and flare jeans which are still very popular and work with the outfits above.

If you decide to take the plunge and shop for your own “skinnies,” bring a good, honest friend to help you decide if the pair you like is flattering. Pay attention to the rise (usually a mid-rise is the most comfortable), and unless you have the body of the aforementioned track star, stay away from “super skinny,” “ultra skinny,” “extreme skinny,” or “jeggings.” Have fun! Wearing your skinnies for the first time can be an exciting and liberating experience. Walk with confidence.
